DIAZEPAM FOR FEAR OF FLYING
Ashfield Medical Practice has reviewed its Benzodiazepine prescribing policy and based on national guidelines, will no longer prescribe Benzodiazepines or sedatives such as Diazepam to patients for fear of flying.
Increasing concerns have arisen regarding prescribing these medications.
As safety issues have become better understood, it is clear that Diazepam has a number of unwanted side effects and risks.
- Benzodiazepines are not approved treatments for phobias. Doctors can be held responsible if you have bad side effects when prescribing them for fears. They are not recommended for mild anxiety. They are used for moderate to severe anxiety with other treatments. Diazepam is not licensed for this use
Benzodiazepines are sedatives that can make you feel more sleepy and relaxed. During a flight, they might impair your reactions and behaviour in an emergency. This could put you, other passengers, and crew at greater risk if they need to help you.
Diazepam use can increase your risk of DVT/blood clots due to sedation and therefore you are less likely to move your legs.
While Benzodiazepines usually cause drowsiness, they can sometimes make people restless or agitated. This can cause problems at airports or during flights.
Breathing can change at high altitude. Even healthy people experience lower oxygen levels. Benzodiazepines can slow your breathing, which might be dangerous if you have heart or lung issues already.
These effects are worse if you drink alcohol, which is common on flights. Alcohol can increase the risks discussed earlier.
Benzodiazepines are illegal in some countries. You could face trouble with authorities if you carry or use them there.
Driving be affected by Benzodiazepines. They stay in your system for varying times. Sedation can impair driving and cause accidents, especially if you are new to the medication. Combining them with alcohol makes it worse. Laws about drug driving differ from country to country. You can be tested for drugs at roadside checks.
